The Secret Lives of Western Pond Turtles
9AM-1:30PM, Saturday, 18 May, Rancho Canada del Oro OSP. Take an easy 3 mile total out-and-back hike into a closed part of the preserve to observe western pond turtles. We'll pass through a riparian corridor to a large reservoir teeming with aquatic life and home to numerous pond turtles. At water's edge we'll observe a variety of seasonal insects including colorful dragonflies. Dress in layers, wear sturdy shoes, and sun production, bring water and a snack if desired.
Moon Blooms In June!
5:30PM-7:30PM, Friday, 21 June, Calero/Rancho San Vicente. Take a Moderate 3.5 mile hike to see soap root in bloom. This "evening bloomer's" exquisite white flower attracts hummingbirds and a variety of insects to aid in pollination. Learn the many ways native Ohlone used the versatile plant. Meet at the Calero Boat Launch ($6 parking fee). Dress in layers with sturdy hiking shoes and drinking water. This is a guided hike in a "closed area" not yet open for public access. Group stays together. Some steep sections.
