Golden Eyes
25 May 2007
Late spring along a nearby county park trail.
Chanced upon yet another baby Western Rattlesnake.
This one had the most beautiful gold-colored eyes.
Folklore warns us of the hypnotic power of a serpent's eyes.
As I stared mesmerized, it slowly raised nearly half its length off the ground.
To intimidate me, to gage my size as a possible threat --
and to advance into a striking postion.
Although it didn't hiss or strike, it was clearly very annoyed.
It flicked its tongue repeatedly and vibrated its button-rattle nonstop.
Then slipped away into a thick tangle of grass.
