Coast Horned Lizard
See how well this Coast Horned Lizard's coloration matches its habitat?
This 4.5-inch specimen was beautifully formed.
Basking beside the trail, it remained stationary while being photographed.
Horned Lizards' bodies are wide and somewhat flat.
Common in lowlands along sandy washes where scattered low shrubs
provide cover. Open areas for basking, patches of fine loose soil
where it can bury itself and ants, other insect prey to eat.*
