Autumn 2020
Nature Never Disappoints
A routine check of the oak hosting the annual sulpur polypore showed no sign of one
Leaving the area, I chanced upon a 3-ft long gopher snake.
I doubt it had ever encountered a human before.
The snake's color pattern blended beautifully with its surroundings.
Gradually, it seemed to sense a threat and began exhibiting defensive characteristics.
It flattened its chisle-shaped head to mimic the wedge-shaped head of a rattlesnake.
Then coiled itself lightening fast as if to strike.
But instead, slipped away through the dry grasses.
While overhead, big-leaf maple leaves whispered.
